Salt Lake City Council Candidate Luke Garrott Ends Up Sending Spam
Seems that the spam news in Utah is all over the place these days. I got the following in my inbox this morning:
Dear Supporters,
We’ve all got to grow up sometime – even Luke. He turns 40 next Thursday (!!!), and while he may not be too happy about the milestone we figure what better time to celebrate him and his run for Salt Lake City Council?
So…mark your calendars! Birthday bonanza for Luke – Thursday, October 18th, 7:00 pm at CG Sparks Furniture, 454 South 500 West. Light refreshments will be served.
We’d love to see you all there and promise a good time for all!
Also, today marks another important milestone – we’re only 4 weeks from Election Day! Now more than ever we need to hit the streets hard and finish strong…and we can’t do it without your support!
If you can help in any way – walking neighborhoods, contributing financially, displaying a yard sign – we truly need and appreciate every last ounce of support. Please help Luke finish as strong as possible; we need it now more than ever.
Oh, and I almost forgot – Luke’s new website! It’s been a long time coming, but the new site is ready and open to the public. Stop by, take a look around, and send the link on to a friend or two…or three!
Again, thank each and every one of you for everything you’ve done…thanks to you we couldn’t be happier with where we are! All we need is one final push and we’ll have reason to celebrate on November 6th!
Sincerely,
The Luke Garrott Campaign

I e-mailed the campaign address to demand removal and find out where they got my e-mail address from. Unfortunately, the campaign manager was as clueless as I was as to how my address ended up on there. I suspect someone on the campaign team thought it was a good idea to do a bulk add from a less-than-scrupulous source without thinking through how the ill will engendered by such an action would adversely affect the campaign.
Hey candidates? Make sure you thoroughly scrub those e-mail addresses before you start sending out bulk messages. It'll keep your face egg-free.
I got the same email today, and I don’t even live in SLC much less Council District 4. I’m wondering if one of his volunteers bought one of those ubiquitous CD’s off the internets. Either that, or paid SG Consulting five large to do it for them.
I asked specifically about SG Consulting and the campaign manager replied that the list was compiled in-house. I, of course, recommended they start cleaning house internally to get rid of whomever is signing up random folks.
man … Never, ever use someone’s list. Always build your own.
On the other side, I got one as well, but, as I haven’t been on his list before, I was actually pretty happy about it. Go figure. 🙂
Gotta give them credit, though…after I complained, I received an apology from Sam the campaign manager with a promise to remove me from the list.
Can’t say I every got the same timely response from a certain pirate.
