Soccer Stadium Gets Bogged Down
Well, this is a really big surprise. Seems that Real Salt Lake can't come up with detailed financial projections in a timely fashion in order to get the county money flowing. Can this be any big surprise? Dave Checketts throws the adult equivalent of a temper tantrum when the county won't give him a big chunk of money with few strings attached and no voter approval required, so it's little surprise that he'd still have a "just give us the money" attitude.
It would be dangerous for Real to put their handout up for voter approval. After all, voters in many cities and many states said "heck no" to handouts to sports teams. It's no wonder either. History has proven time and time again that the public funds often exceed the value of the team, and the money is never made back in any kind of revenue increases. Why on earth should we vote millions of dollars to some rich jerk because he thinks he shouldn't have to pay for his own sports team?
The answer is we shouldn't. This is one of those times I'm glad I don't live in the city limits of Sandy so I don't have to pay even more for this organized madness that is corporate welfare. I hope Mr. Checketts will leave town and never come back. Good freakin' riddance.
